Since March 2020 we have seen the economy plunge into an L- Shaped recession. Darren Shirlaw, BoB’s global economic commentator, shares with us what this means for businesses and the economy.

During an L Shaped recession the markets fall very quickly; usually one day of trading losses, and over a month the markets have normally fallen by circa 30% or more. It is described as an “L” because of its two parts: a sharp fall straight down and then a recession at the bottom which normally lasts 18 months.

The good news is trends tell us that there will be a 10-year period of fast growth in the economy from September 2021.

There are 3 phases to this recession: Shock, Recovery and Rebuild.
