Despite winning two Commonwealth Games 800 metres titles, plus a plethora of world and European championship silvers and an Olympic bronze, the big one – Olympic gold – looked certain to have eluded her until, ten years after she first started winning medals, Kelly Holmes struck gold twice at the 2004 Athens Olympics inside a few days.
Who can forget the look on her face when she realised that at long last she had achieved her dream? But this barely scratches the surface for Kelly – who received her Damehood in 2005 – after a lifetime of struggles.
